Pixinguinha (Alfredo Vianna) 8 Solo pieces arranged by Carlos Barbosa Lima 34 pages $16.95
The Brazilian composer, Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Jr. was born on April 23, 1898 in Rio de Janiero. "Pixinguinha" was his nickname since childhood.
At 11, Pixinguinha was already playing the cavaquinho (a small guitar with 4 strings, usually played with a plectrum). A few years later, he made his 1st record. Shortly thereafter, he was conducting ensembles of Brazilian music. Pixinguinha was a multi-faceted musician--singer, percussionist, flautist, saxophonist, composer, orchestrator, and conductor.
As a composer, Pixinguinha made a remarkable contribution in establishing Brazil's musical direction and characteristics. Some of his songs made a strong impact in Brazilian culture, sung by generations throughout the country and played by all kinds on instrumental ensembles.
Pixinguinha was admired and hailed by great Brazilian musicians such as Villa-Lobos, Nazareth, Mignone, Gnattali, and Carvalho. He collaborated with guitarists such as Joao Pernambuco and Laurindo Almeida. The guitarist and composer Baden Powell was his protege.
All of Brazil mourned Pixinguinha's death. At his funeral more than 200,000 people gathered and sang Carinhoso, his most famous tune, as a final tribute to the beloved composer.
